I confess that when I first heard about Bravo Bravo, I wasn’t impressed. “That sounds…. boring,” I thought. “A fundraiser event? It’s probably nothing but old people and slow music.”
As I talked to more and more people — my age, I should point out — I was struck by two things. One, everyone I talked to about Bravo Bravo mentioned how cool it was. OK, one person I could brush off — but everyone? The other thing was I was finding that people I knew from different circles all knew about the event — a neighbor, a coworker, a family member. If it was reaching that wide of a group of people, surely it had to be something.
And, really, something it is.
Taking place this Friday, June 3rd, from 7:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., the website bills the event as a “scene you don’t want to miss.” It’s the 12th-annual event, held at the Detroit Opera House, and features more than 35 treats from area bars and restaurants. That doesn’t include all the musical entertainment that evening, either, and the dancing that is sure to accompany that.
And, not only is it a good time, it’s a popular time — sold out for three years running — and a profitable time to continue supporting Michigan Opera Theatre. The event has raised more than a million dollars since it started, and hopes for $200,000 this year alone from a combination of sponsorships and patrons. The funding supports Michigan Opera Theatre’s artistic and educational endeavors throughout the year, and also supports the improvement and sustainability of the Detroit Opera House.
So, what do you think? Have you been in the past few years? Did you have a good time? What was your favorite part?
